最近、小学部の生徒から私宛に手紙をもらいました。とつぜんに何だろうと思って開けてみたのですが、「サニーサイドの中学部をつくってください」と書いてありました。年齢的に小学校の卒業が近づき、進路について悩んでいるのだと思います。

生徒がそういうことを言ってくれるのはもちろん嬉しいことですが、私がさらに嬉しかったのは、彼女が文中、「自分はサニーサイドに来て学ぶことや探求することが好きになった」とか「自分のしたことを振り返って行動できるようになった」、そして「私はもっとサニーサイドで学びたいことがたくさんあります」と書いてくれたことです。読んで胸が熱くなりました。

思い返せば、2016年の始め、小学部を作るのかどうかを迷っていた頃、最後その決め手になったのは、うちの卒園児の当時４年生の女の子がいじめが原因で学校に行くのが辛く、「園長先生小学校作ってください」と何度も言われていたことでした。所詮、幼稚園の空き教室でやる小学校なんて、“なんちゃって”だと言われても仕方ないと思いましたが、それでもその子の居場所になるのならと始めたものでした。

今は私もそれなりに小学校の経営がどのようなものであるかを学びつつありますので、振り返ればかなり無茶をしたなという思いもしますが、それでも、やはりそこに生徒や支えてくださる保護者の方の存在があってここまでくることが出来たわけで、今回手紙をくれたその子の思いも、自分の中ではかけがえのない、教育者としての自分を励ましてくれる大切な存在です。

本人に、「園長先生はこういう生徒がうちにいることを多くの人に知ってほしいから、名前は出さないのでシェアしてもいい？」と確認をとって、許可をもらいましたので、また、我が子自慢のようになってしまいますが、ご紹介させていただきました。素晴らしい子ども達がいてくれて、本当に幸せに思います。

I recently received a letter from our Primary student. I opened the letter wondering what it is, she wrote “Please open MYP department”. Now that she is reaching the age to graduate Primary education, she is starting to think what her future options.

It is always special when students say they want to stay with us longer. But what really made me happy was that she wrote in the letter, “At Sunnyside, I found the joy for learning, I’ve come to like inquiring.””Before I never reflected my action or my learning, but now I do, I think how I can do things better.””I have a lot more that I want to learn at this school.” It seemed she knows about herself, she knows what she wants for her life.

Looking back the time when I started our Primary in 2016, it was taking me time to make my final decision if I should open a class, but something pushed my back was a girl, who was the graduate of our Kindergarten, 4th Grade girl, who was suffering with going to her school, due to bullying by her classmates. She kept asking me to create “Sunnyside Primary” every time she visited me. So in the end, I decided to create a small class so that I knew she has the place to come to.

Now that I know what it is like to run a school, I must admit, I should have had deeper consideration, but it has always been our students, supporting parents, that brought us where we are now, the message I got this time is another very special encouragement for me as an educator.

Knowing that the letter I got from my student is a private thing, I asked her for permission to share with our school community. I said to her I want everyone to know that we have such great student at Sunnyside.

I cannot think enough how lucky we are to be surrounded by a lot of amazing students.

サニーサイドインターナショナルスクールにおいては、「次世代を生きる子ども達のための教育」を大きなビジョンとしてかかげています。
色々な観点で、変えていきたいと思うことがたくさんあるわけですが、先生達も現実は日々あれこれと追われているので、なかなか落ち着いて具体的な取り組みをすることが出来ないというのがあります。

そこで私は尊敬する教育者、James Nottingham氏と、そのチームの力を借りて、ここからまずは３年間の継続プロジェクトとして教育改革のための具体的なプロジェクトに取り組むことにしました。

サポートチームはイギリスをメインに、オーストラリアやアメリカから参加してくれます。本来であれば、年に数回、実際に来日してワークショップや行動観察などを行うのですが、今はすべてオンラインになっています。

写真は先日のミーティングの様子です。
夏休み中にまずは学校として「サニーサイドを卒業した生徒にどのような人物像を期待するのか」というテーマに基づいて、おおきく３つの目標を決めました。
(1) Students who have a Growth Mindsetグロースマインドセットを持っている
(2) Students who are active ambassadors of their beliefs and values自分たちの信念や価値（伝統文化など）を伝えていける
(3) International-Minded learners who are willing and able to learn from others　オープンマインドで仲間からも積極的に学ぼうとする
実際は、職員の中でも色々な意見が出た中で何度も話し合ってこの３つに絞りました。

そして、今はBaseline Evaluationといって、自分たちの現在地知るためのデータ集めをしています。

具体的にはChallenging Learningのチームメンバーが、サニーサイドのリーダー、職員、生徒達にインタビューをして、どういう考え方をしているか、例えば、「学びとは何だと思うか？」「挑戦すると聞くとどんなイメージを持つか」「知識とスキル、どちらが大切だと思うか」など、なかなか難しいことを聞かれます。
また、色々なクラスのビデオを５分間ずつ撮影したり、園内の掲示物などの写真をとってあちらに提出し、それを専門のチームが分析をして、現在地のレポートを書いてくれます。
今はまずそこまでです。

今後は保護者の皆様にも、進捗状況をシェアしながら、一緒に見守っていただきたいと思っています。
時差だけは乗り越えることが出来ませんが、あちらのチームメンバーも昼夜問わず、一生懸命関わって下さって本当にありがたいばかりです。

At Sunnyside International School, we are aiming for “Education for the future”, we would like to keep changing for our students.
But as it is the case with any other schools, teachers are constantly occupied with the daily routine, and the reality is, it is not easy to simply create time and opportunity to start new project.

So I have decided to ask Mr.James Nottingham and his team for the support.
The team members are located mainly in the UK, but also in Australia, America.
We meet online to discuss how we can proceed with this project.

So here are some photos from the session last week.
We first started with deciding our big 3 aims. After a long discussion amongst our
staff members, we have come to;
(1) Students who have a Growth Mindset
(2) Students who are active ambassadors of their beliefs and values
(3) International-Minded learners who are willing and able to learn from others

And now we are going through the phase called “baseline evaluation”, this is to know where we are right now.
Challenging learning team had meetings with our senior leaders, classroom teachers, students, to get the idea of our thinking.
Questions asked were various, for example, “What is “learning” for you?””What is “challenge for you?””Which is more important, knowledge or skill?”
some of them were “hard” questions, but I think our teachers and students were confident to speak for themselves.

We were also asked to take 5 min long video of various classrooms, and take photos of our displays, etc.
Challenging Learning team will analyse all what we have submitted and they will write a summary report for us then we start from there!!

Challenging Learning team members are all so dedicated, we have to get over the time difference when meeting online, but they do everything they can do for us and I’m so grateful.
And James Nottingham is such inspirational leader. I admire his ideas as educator in a great deal.

So this project will continue for at least 3 years, but I would to keep sharing our progress with our school community.
